Ocean View Rooftop
#

Wellness at height in Kijkduin – In the new iconic coastal complex Lombarde in Kijkduin, we created no fewer than three exclusive roof gardens, including this wellness rooftop on the second-highest floor of this high-end penthouse. A unique roof terrace, created with an eye for detail, sustainability and comfort – entirely focused on the breathtaking view of the sea.

Nautical design

From the penthouse, it feels as if the ocean is within reach. The rooftop has been designed as an extension of the building itself, with the same nautical-inspired signature: bronze-tinted facades, ribbed shapes and sharp lines. Together with the architects involved, we translated this style into a warm, luxurious outdoor space with a distinct wellness character.

Luxury wellness with sea view

At the centre of this rooftop terrace is a fully integrated Sundance Spa for four people, subtly recessed into decking made from Esthec Robusto in the colour Delicate – splinter-free, non-slip and extremely comfortable under bare feet. We also created space for technical equipment and extra storage in the same enclosure. A sense of tranquillity has been created around the spa through the use of a single continuous material, effortlessly drawing the eye to the view. Next to the jacuzzi, we placed two spacious sun loungers, ideally situated behind a glass balustrade for undisturbed sunbathing with a view of the sea. A sturdy JEE-O Soho outdoor shower offers cooling and cleansing after a dip and is a visually striking element in this outdoor wellness area.

Two elevated garden rooms

An imposing olive tree in a custom-made raised planter naturally divides the terrace into two separate garden rooms. On one side, we created a cosy lounge area with a large comfortable lounge sofa, equipped with an integrated DOME heat lamp from Heatsail. A generous Tuuci parasol provides shade or sunshine as desired and contributes to the feeling of security and luxury.

For long evenings, we installed a custom-made ceramic fire table made of weather-resistant Dekton in the colour Lunar, a warm beach shade. We integrated a seating element made of the same weather-resistant Esthec material into the planter box, providing additional seating with a stylish finish.

Eating, lounging and enjoying

On the other side of the terrace, we created an elegant dining area with a custom-made Dekton dining table – scratch-resistant and heat-resistant – and a raised bar table, which is also stain-resistant and easy to maintain. The combination of these durable materials with the stylish lines of the design gives the terrace a serene and modern look. A row of black aluminium posts above the bar table provides privacy and structure without detracting from the open character of the terrace.

Sustainable & hurricane proof

The entire terrace floor is constructed from a combination of ceramic tiles and Esthec Robusto (lightweight construction with fibreglass backing), laid on tile supports (see the Process photo folder for images of the installation). These durable and lightweight materials are not only easy to maintain, but also resistant to weather influences: strong wind, water, sun, sea – perfect for a location right on the coast.

On the fence side, we installed a raised aluminium planter with smart storage space for garden cushions and accessories. The fence itself is made of durable Thermo Essen wood, which creates a warm, natural look that contrasts beautifully with the clean lines of the building.

Atmospheric evening lighting

In the evening, the rooftop transforms into an enchanting place. Sea-resistant multi-stemmed trees create a playful light show on the ceiling, illuminated by strategically placed In-lite spotlights. Royal Botania Dome floor lamps provide subtle, bright light that enhances the warm atmosphere.

As an eye-catcher on the side terrace, we placed a solid bench made of four hand-formed clay blocks from Atelier Vierkant – a sculptural statement that invites tranquillity. The Atelier Vierkant pots also reappear in several places, beautifully illuminated by integrated floor spotlights that emphasise the character of the clay.

Challenges in the construction process

A project of this calibre naturally involves technical and logistical challenges. For example, hoisting all the garden elements required precision and meticulous planning. The constant strong sea breeze played a major role during the execution, both in terms of installing the elements and ensuring the safety of our team.
